Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOUGLAS (SPUD) SMITH It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Smith on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at the age of 85 years. He is survived by his wife Anne; daughter Cheryle (Mike) Sosnowski; son John (Rita) Smith; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, Fred, Bill and Lynn and their families and cousin Joan Alcock in England. Spud was predeceased by his father Fred, mother Mildred, sister Dolly and one grandson. Spud was a member of the Weston Brooklands Legion No. 2 for 58 years. He served in Europe with the 15th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery Artillery and later transferred to the Canadian Scottish 3rd Division Infantry Regiment. He took part in the invasion of Normandy, France and served in Holland, Belgium and Germany. Spud enjoyed the outdoors very much and his most enjoyable years were spent with his wife Anne at Twin Beaches on Lake Manitoba, fishing and gardening. People there called him Whispering Smith because of his loud, bellowing voice. At Spud's request, cremation has taken place, and there will be no service. neil bardal inc. 949-2200

My Father and Spud were friends from the 50s. My father had a lot in common with Doug (service). I always remember when we went to twin beaches he’d see us pull up and say with his “Whispering Voice“ Your spending the weekend! He was one of the most kindest souls, but tough 👍 A friend to have on your side! - Miss you “Spud”! - Posted by: Wes Phillips (Friend - longtime friend of the family) on: Feb 27, 2025
